Photos For the New Fall Season of Once Upon a Time, Arrow, Elementary and Castle
The fall TV preview issue of Entertainment Weekly has scoops and pictures of new shows like the CW’s Arrow and CBS’ Elementary; plus returning shows Castle and Once Upon a Time, both on ABC.
The new season of Once Upon the Time will deal with the aftermath of Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) breaking Queen Regina’s (Lana Parilla) curse over Storybrooke and freeing the fairy-tale characters so they now have their memories back. Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold released magic into the modern-day Maine town but it doesn’t work the same way it does in fairy-tale land; as the queen will quickly find out.
Emma will have mixed emotions about her newly discovered parents Snow White/Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming/David (Josh Dallas). She still has abandonment issues about her parents giving her up.
New Disney characters will be introduced like Mulan (Jamie Chung), Lancelot (Sinqua Walls), Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), and a warrior-like Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger). There will still be flashbacks to fairy-tale land and a pre-curse Storybrooke.
Season 5 of Castle picks up the morning after Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) consummating their relationship. Beckett will try to get back her position at the station after resigning in the season 4 finale. Beckett and Castle will try to keep up appearances as business as usual by keeping their new romance a secret from family and friends. They want to enjoy their new love without other’s opinions. The new couple has issues to confront- will Beckett learn to let her guard down and will Castle ever grow up?
The new CBS show, Elementary is a different twist on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The drug-addled genius detective is finding new life with the Robert Downey Jr. starring Sherlock Holmes’ movies and the BBC series, Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a modern-day detective in London.
In Elementary, Jonny Lee Miller’s (Dark Shadows) Sherlock Holmes is a police crime consultant fresh out of rehab living in New York. The actor had his doubts about taking on the role and consulted his best friend, Jude Law who played Watson in the Sherlock Holmes movies.
In this version of Sherlock Holmes, his side-kick and roommate, Dr. Watson is now a female live-in sober companion named Joan Watson played by Lucy Liu (The Man With the Iron Fist). Watson is a former surgeon who stopped practicing medicine for mysterious reasons. Showrunner Rob Doherty (Ringer, Medium) insists that even though the show’s two stars, Liu and Miller have good chemistry doesn’t mean they will be more than friends. The producers want to avoid the cliche of making their relationship a romantic one just because Watson is female.
The CW’s Arrow stars Stephen Amell (Hung) as the DC comic-book hero, Green Arrow. On the show, his vigilante alter ego is known simply as The Arrow. CW hopes Arrow will fill the void left by their other long running DC comic franchise, Smallville. Arrow chronicles billionaire Oliver Queen who gets shipwrecked on a mysterious island for five years and gains some impressive archery skills. He gets rescued and returns to his hometown of Sterling City, now filled with corruption and crime. Oliver becomes The Arrow to get rid of the criminal elements plaguing the city. The action will alternate between flashbacks to the island detailing his transformation and present-day missions targeting villains.
Katie Cassidy (Melrose Place) is Laurel Lance, a lawyer and Oliver’s ex-girlfriend. In the DC comics she is also known as the Black Canary, Green Arrow’s love interest with an ultrasonic scream. It’s not clear if the Laurel character will become the Black Canary on the show.
Stephen Amell shared he got the superhero role by “deliberately not acting like yet another troubled hero.” His approach was to be likable and enthusiastic. Amell fit the producers vision of “Arrow as a hands-on Bourne-style fighting machine.”
