The Borgias Cancelled!

This Sunday’s season three finale of The Borgias will also mark the show’s series finale. Showtime has cancelled the series about the number one crime family. A two hour movie to wrap up the series will also not happen. It’s sad day for Borgias fans that a beloved show will not get the finale it deserves.

“When they looked at what it could cost, it was just too expensive,” series creator Neil Jordan told Deadline. “I would have loved to bring all the characters to a conclusion. All of the actors were heartbroken we couldn’t continue, and so was I.”

Knowing Robb Stark’s fate was a far gone conclusion didn’t make his death any less easier to witness. Even sadder is that we won’t have the pleasure of seeing the talented Richard Madden in the Games of Thrones.

Richard Madden expresses to Rolling Stone how he wants Robb Stark to be remembered.

Typically, in Game of Thrones, in this world, people who are honest and just and do things for the right reasons are the people who tend not to survive, and Robb’s a great example of that. I hope he’s remembered as a good man and essentially the man who would have been the best person to lead the Seven Kingdoms. It’s tragic that he was killed because I think he was the best leader of all the candidates available at the moment.

Richard Madden will be missed.

Peter Berg’s upcoming film, Lone Survivor wrapped production in New Mexico. The film is a true account of Operation Redwing and the fallen heroes of Seal Team 10. The story is based on Marcus Luttrell’s book of the same name.

In 2005, Marcus Luttrell led a team of Navy Seals into the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. Their mission was to capture and kill a Taliban leader thought to be allied with Osama Bin Ladin. The team ran into three kids and an old man which under the rules of engagement they could have killed but instead let go. The team was surrounded and under fire from Al Qaeda soldiers. The entire SEAL team and a helicopter rescue team were killed in action. The sole survivor of the mission was Marcus Luttrell.

The film stars Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell; Taylor Kitsch as Michael P. Murphy; Emile Hirsch as Danny Dietz; Eric Bana as Lieutenent Commander Erik S. Kristensen; Ben Foster as Matthew Axelson; and Alexander Ludwig as Shane Patton.

Lone Survivor will be released January 10, 2014 in just in time for Oscar season. The release date bodes well for the film and shows the powers-that-be’s level of confidence in the strength of the movie. Peter Berg and Taylor Kitsch may finally get their much deserved redemption for Battleship.

Dominic West (The Wire) and Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) lend their considerable talent to the BBC America TV movie Burton and Taylor. The story follows the mega stars later in their turbulent relationship where they reunited (on the stage at least) for the ill-fated 1983 stage production of Noel Coward’s play Private Lives.

Both actors bear a closer resemblance to the legendary stars and it is time we get an adaption about the volitile and passionate couple that does their memory justice. I just hope this version is the one that will do it so we can finally scrub from our brain the images of the Lifetime movie Liz and Dick.

A few years ago, I read “Furious Love: Elziabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Marriage of the Century.” The biography was written by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger. It re-counted the famous couples great and passionate romance through Burton’s diary entries and their letters to one another. This real live romance between the two legends of the screen and stage is better than any romance novel.

The vampire romantic drama was just picked up by Sony Pictures Classic.

During a Q&A for the film, Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston talked about our culture’s never-ending fascination with vampires.

“I suppose because they live these long, long, potentially never-ending lives, and we’re all so terrified of thinking of mortality that we’d rather think about being immortal,” she said. Swinton throughout made vague allusions to vampires being the modern day outsider.

“There’s also something about the way they live on the [fringes] of life,” she continued. “They’re in the backwaters. I love the idea in this film about invisible lives or unclaimed work, that feeling of making [art] and not wanting to put it out there in the world and just putting it out into the ether somehow. I think the idea of invisibility and yet existing visibly is really beautiful and it was always coming. I was never surprised when Jim said to me, ‘Let’s make a vampire film.’ I felt like saying ‘You’ve been making vampire films for years,’ it feels like a very natural state that invisible, immortal world.”

“The idea of a character who embodied a romanticism and melancholy, but still motivated by a curiosity towards the things that he loved and I feel like [my character] is fascinated by two separate things which are twined: music and science,” he said. “He’s enamored by vibrating particles, they might be stringed instruments and they might be stars and he’s so passionate about these things and he’s such a brilliant musician and engineer, but in a way he can’t see that and [Tilda’s character] is broader and she can hold his fragility. And it was just a beautiful story about two people who loved each other and accepted each other and they happened to be vampires. And the idea of exploring love in a context of immortality, if you are challenged with immortality, is it a blessing? Is it a curse? And what does that do to your commitment.”

BBC The Fall Debuts on Netflix

The BBC series, The Fall was available for streaming on Netflix this week. The crime drama stars Gillian Anderson as DSI Stella Gibson and Jamie Dornan (Once Upon a Time) as serial killer Paul Spector.

There are five episodes available on Netflix and I watched up to episode four. The series is set in Belfast Ireland. Anderson’s Gibson is a tough, driven, private, and work-obsessed Police detective from London who doesn’t give a damn how she is precieved. Stella is brought in to conduct a 28-day review of a high profile investigation into a murdered young architect who was found strangled and artfully posed in her bed. More murders take place while Stella is in Belfast and she is tasked with heading up the investigation linking the murders to one killer.

A side story line has Stella meeting detective Jimmy Olson (Ben Peel), and having a one night stand with him. Stella’s intentions when she meets Olson is clear when she tells him her hotel room and he shows up asking if this is what she meant. Later on Olson is found gunned down and Stella is questioned about her “relationship” with the dead inspector who was married and had two children. She tells the officer questioning her that it was just sex and she has no information that will help him with this investigation. The inspector asked if she knew Olson was married and had children. She tells him the information never came up. She later points out to the inspector that it’s the one night stand that bothers him. ”Man fucks woman. Subject, man. Verb, fuck. Subject, woman. Woman fucks man. Subject, woman. Object, man.” She knows how men see women in her position. It bothers them to see her being so emotionless and cavalier about her personal life.

The drama is not as much about whodoneit but whydoneit. The model turned actor, Jamie Dornan is Paul Spector, a quiet family man with a dark murderous streak. He strangles and kills his vicims, not for sexual gratification but for tittilation of the hunt. There are great scenes juxtaposing Spector and Gibson as she is hunting him down. It is a story of the hunter and the hunted and how they get into each other’s head space to stay one step ahead of the other. Dornan is surprisingly creepy as the killer and you keep wondering what is driving him to kill.

The pacing is slow but the camara angles from Spector’s perspective is interesting in the way we can see through the killer’s eyes and how he sees his prey. A second season of the series was just ordered.

It’s nice to see Gillian Anderson back in a television series, her first since The X-Files ended. She plays another intelligent woman but one who is more guarded, mysterious and less emotional than her Scully character. It’s nice to see Anderson in another strong female role. Stella is more overt about her sexuality; more so than Scully ever was.

Archie Punjabi, Kalinda from The Good Wife has a small role as a medical examiner. Sadly she doesn’t get that many scenes but the ones she has with Anderson’s Stella gives glimpses of how much better the series could be if these two women were given more screen time together.

Jim Jarmusch’s Late Cannes Entry: Only Lovers Left Alive

Indie director, Jim Jarmusch is known for films such as Broken Flowers and Coffee and Cigarettes. His latest film, Only Lovers Left Alive was a last minute entry to the Cannes Film Festival competition. The film stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) as Adam and Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) as Eve. They are centuries old lovers that are reunited. The film also stars Mia Wasikowska (Lawless) as Ava, Eve’s wild uncontrollable younger sister; Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Into Darkness) is Ava’s boyfriend, Ian; and John Hurt (Harry Potter) is Marlowe. The film is described as a different take on the vampire genre.

Jim Jarmusch gave a statement about the film:

Only Lover Left Alive is an unconventional love story between a man and a woman, Adam and Eve. (My script was partially inspired by the last book published by Mark Twain: The Diaries of Adam and Eve — though no direct reference to the book is made other than the character’s names.) These two lovers are archetypal outsiders, classic bohemians, extremely intelligent and sophisticated — yet still in full possession of their animal instincts. They have traveled the world and experienced many remarkable things, always inhabiting the shadowed margins of society. And, like their own love story, their particular perspective on human history spans centuries — because they happen to be vampires.

But this is not your usual vampire story. Set in the very distinct cities of Detroit and Tangier, and taking place almost entirely at night, Adam and Eve must have human blood to survive. But they now live in the world of the 21st century where biting the neck of a stranger would be reckless and regressive — for survival, they must be certain the blood that sustains them is pure and free of disease or contamination. And, almost like shadows, they have learned long ago to deftly avoid the attention of any authorities. For our film, the vampire is a resonant metaphor — a way to frame the deeper intentions of the story. This is a love story, but also the story of two exceptional outsiders who, given their unusual circumstances, have a vast overview of human and natural history, including stunning achievements and tragic and brutal failures. Adam and Eve are themselves metaphors for the present state of human life — they are fragile and endangered, susceptible to natural forces, and to the shortsighted behavior of those in power.

The film piqued my interest because one- I am a fan of the vampire genre and am always looking for a refreshing take on it; two - I love the actors in the film: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska and Anton Yelchin.

The first movie I have ever saw Tilda Swinton in was the 1992 film, Orlando that was based on the Virginia Woolf’s novel with the same name. She was enigmatic as the androgynous title character. I have enjoyed seeing everything she’s been in since then. She is an actress that can disappear completely into and inhabit her characters. Her film roles are impressively diverse and it seems she can play any part even a male one.

The same can be said about Tom Hiddleston’s varying roles. How deliciously dark was his Loki in The Avengers? In the same year he appeared as Rachel Weisz’s rogish lover in The Deep Blue Sea and a courageous solider in War Horse.

Michael Fassbender was originally considered for the role of Adam in Only Lovers Left Alive. I think Tom Hiddleston is better fit playing a moody fatalistic vampire. Tilda Swinton has such expressive eyes that she easily conveys morose.

I feel like I have been waiting forever for the highly anticipated Wong Kar Wai film, The Grandmasters to finally come out here in the states. There hasn’t been many images from the film until now. The melodically moody auteur hasn’t released a feature film since 2007’s My Blueberry Nights, his first Western film.

The Grandmasters stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai as martial-arts master Ip Man who trained Bruce Lee. Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen, stars of Ang Lee’s 2000 martial arts film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tiger also appear in the film.

I have been a fan of Wong Kar Wai’s films since the 1990’s Days of Being Wild. He is, for me, one of the best Chinese filmmakers of our time. I still remember the breath taking shot of the Iguazu Waterfall in the 1997 film Happy Together. Both films starred Tony Leung Chiu Wai and the late Leslie Cheung. Tony has had a long collaboration with the legendary director. He is the Depp to Wong Kar Wai’s Burton. The actor also starred in two of Wong Kar Wai’s most acclaimed films, Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love. The longing between the two lovers seen In the Mood for Love was palpable placed in the context of Wong Kar Wai’s visual brilliance and tone. Lightening seemed to strike only once and the magic was lost when the director tried to revisit the story in 2046. Besides In the Mood for Love, my other favorite film from Wong Kar Wai was the quiet film, The Hand - one of three shorts in the 2004 Eros. The film’s story was reminiscent of the longing and missed chances for love seen In the Mood for Love. In The Hand, Chang Chen starred as the shy tailor’s assistant opposite Gong Li’s (Memoirs of a Geisha) aging prostitute.

Ben Whishaw and Douglas Booth Appear in Clash Magazine Cannes Issue

Talented British actors Ben Whishaw and Douglas Booth are featured in the Cannes issue of Clash Magazine.

The first time I saw Ben Whishaw was in the 2008 film adaption of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. He was memorably heartbreaking as the fragile and lost Sebastian Flyte opposite Matthew Goode as Charles Ryder, Hayley Atwell as Julia Flyte and Emma Thompson as Lady Marchmain. He comes off as being both intense and quirky and his film roles seems to reflect that.

Last year, he took on the iconic role of Q in the James Bond film Skyfall which was the fourth highest grossing film for 2012. Ben will reprise the role in the twenty-fourth James Bond film due out in 2016.

One of his break-out roles was starring as John Keats opposite Abbie Cornish’s Fanny Brawne in Jane Campion’s 2009 film, Bright Star. The film followed the affair between the poet and his love until his untimely death at the age of 25. Ben was also in the 2010 film adaption of Shakespere’s The Tempest. In 2012, he appeared in the Wachowski sibling’s Cloud Atlas. He is currently starring in the BBC series, The Hour.

Douglas Booth’s classic chiseled face and pouty lips gives him an adrogynous look. He has such a beautiful face that if he had lived in a time before film was invented, he would have been immortalized in marble or paint. The 20-year-old actor has appeared in several British television series and was featured in a Burberry campaign with young British stars like Emma Watson. He will soon play Romeo opposite Hailee Steinfeld’s Juliet in the upcoming film adaption of Shakespere’s Romeo and Juliet.

Cillian Murphy appeared in the 2012 Clash Magazine film issue in which he talked about appearing in the London stage production of his one-man show Misterman. In the show, he played Thomas Magill, a man from a small Irish town who thinks he has a connection with God.

Cillian Murphy is fearless actor who has worked with an impressive group of talented directors. The scene of Murphy alone in a deserted London for Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is the one haunting image that still sticks with me when thinking about that film. His character of Timekeeper Raymond Leon was the only memorable thing about the 2012 film, In Time. Would Wes Carven’s Red Eye have been as good without Murphy’s Jackson Ripper being so charming and sinister?

Cillian Murphy elevates every film he appears in and gives an unforgettable performance regardless if he is the star or a supporting player. It is confounding how the 36-year-old-actor with a an expressive boyish face easily vacillates between sweet and scary. He can morph into a believably menacing character with just one intense look or smirk.

His range of films are impressive for the diverse roles and mainstream/indie appeal: Christopher Nolan’s Inception and Batman: The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises; Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Sunshine; Wes Craven’s Red Eye, Ken Loach’s The Wind that Shakes the Barley; Disco Pigs and Breakfast on Pluto.

He’s one of those actors I don’t necessarily seek out in films but once I take notice of him in a movie, I am hooked.

Brad Pitt Featured in Latest Issue of Esquire Magazine

Brad Pitt appears in the June/July issue of Esquire Magazine to promote his upcoming summer zombie flick, World War Z.

The 49-year-old actor was photographed by Max Vadukul and profiled by Tom Junod who also did a profile of Angelina Jolie for Esquire Magazine in 2007.

Excerpt from article:

“I always thought that if I wanted to do a family, I wanted to do it big. I wanted there to be chaos in the house… there’s constant chatter in our house, whether it’s giggling or screaming or crying or banging. I love it. I love it. I love it. I hate it when they’re gone. I hate it. Maybe it’s nice to be in a hotel room for a day – ‘Oh, nice, I can finally read a paper.’ But then, by the next day, I miss that cacophony, all that life.”

The power couple recently made headlines for Jolie’s op-ed in the New York Times in which she shared her decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy. Pitt was by the side of his fiancee and mother of his six children for her entire treatment.

“Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.”

Brad Pitt released a statement to the London Evening Standard regarding Jolie’s procedure.

“Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie’s choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic. I thank our medical team for their care and focus.

“All I want for is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family.”

Early buzz for World War Z has been more negative than positive with some industry insiders drawing comparisons to the advance negative press for John Carter and Battleship which both did abysmally at the box office for a big-budget movie. World War Z is adapted from a a 2006 post-apocalyptic horror novel by Max Brooks.

World War Z is set to open the Moscow Film Festival.

It’s Cannes Time

Director Francis Lawrence and cast members Jennifer Lawrence, Sam Claflin and Liam Hemsworth attend the 2013 Cannes Film Festival to promote the second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy: Catching Fire.

Francis Lawrence previously directed Like Water for Elephants. Jennifer Lawrence reprises her role as Katniss Everdeen and Liam Hemsworth is back as her friend and potential suitor, Gale Hawthorne. Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman) joins the popular franchise after an extensive casting process in which he won the coveted part of Finnick Odair.

Catching Fire is the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The story is set in a dystopian society where children are chosen and pitted against one another for survival, all in the guise of entertainment for the Capital.

The film is set to open November 22, 2013.

Aussie Stars James Frecheville and Xavier Samuel

Young Australian actors James Frecheville and Xavier Samuel star in Two Mothers opposite Naomi Watts and Robin Wright. The story follows two best friends who live in a small seaside Australian town where they raise two sons who are also close friends. Both women engage in affairs with each other’s sons and gives new meaning to the term, “mother fucker.”

In the film, Xavier Samuel’s character Ian is the one that initiates the affair with his best friend’s mother, Roz (Robin Wright) and falls deeply in love with her.

The actors talked to Teen Vogue about filming in a small secluded seaside town, learning to surf, becoming fast friends and “floating.”

It was a beautiful film! Was it filmed in Australia?

James Frecheville: In Cedar Rocks, which is a seaside town. I think it’s got a resting population of about 28 people a year.”

XS: Yeah, it’s literally one of the kind of untouched places in Australia.”

JF: It’s about a four-hour drive north of the city.”

XS: It’s just a magical kind of place to work and stay. It’s great.”

For so many scenes, you guys are surfing together and you’re both great. Did you go to surf school?

XS: We told the director we could surf, so she sent along a secret video camera person to the beach to film us surfing, to see if we were actually good. She ended up watching the tapes and basically accused us of lying. That’s pretty much how we got to know each other—just out there learning to surf.”

JF: It was great. Our working week for a good part of our spring was flying out to Sydney and surfing Monday to Friday. then flying back for the weekend.”

XS: Pretty amazing gig.”

JF: And it was great because it really calcified a friendship between us.”

Where do you guys live now?

JF: ”We float.”

XS: ”The running joke is that we’re homeless. It’s just because Australia is so far away, you can’t really go back on the weekends. You end up spending some time in Sydney, and some time in L.A.”

JF: ”It’s also sort of what your year is looking like too. After I finished a job in America in the middle of last year, I just went back home and hung out there for six months.”

XS: ”It’s good to go back and refuel and process what’s been going on.”

Xavier Samuel is best known for his roles as Riley in Twilight: Eclipse and as Henry Wriothesley in Anonymous. James Frecheville is best known for his role as Joshua “J” Cody in Animal Kingdom.

Two Mothers will be in theaters August 2013.

Peter Facinelli: He Only Plays a Doctor

The 40-year-old New York native Peter Facinelli is best known for playing Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the mega successful Twilight Saga franchise.

Peter attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He started his career appearing in Six Feet Under, the acclaimed HBO series created by Alan Ball of True Blood fame. He also appeared in the FX legal thriller, Damages that starred Academy Award nominated actress Glenn Close.

Peter currently stars opposite Edie Falco of Sopranos fame in the Showtime comedy, Nurse Jackie that is about a drug addicted nurse with heart. Peter is hilarious as Dr. Fitch Cooper, a handsome ER doctor who has a variation of Tourette’s Syndrome where he grabs women’s boobs. Coop also goes out of his way to try to be well liked by the staff at All Saints.

Colin Egglesfiled Stars in the Lifetime Guilty Pleasure, The Client List

Colin Egglesfield is a 40-year-old actor who hails from Illinois. He started off in the long-running daytime soap opera, All My Children. The soap also boast Transformer’s Josh Duhamel as an alumni. He later appeared on the short-lived CW reboot of Melrose Place.

Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson played tug-of-war with Colin in the 2011 release, Something Borrowed.

Colin can currently be seen in the Lifetime series, The Client List where he stars alongside what Entertainment Weekly deemed the perennial guilty pleasure, Jennifer Love Hewitt. In the series, he plays Evan Parks who is in-love with his sister-in-law, Riley (Jennifer Love Hewitt). Evan’s brother, Kyle (Brian Hallisay) leaves Riley who has to resort to working at a “spa” that gives more than massages to support her two children.
